Immediately after the Civil War, the United States was mostly a rural nation.

By the 1920’s-a mere 60 years later-it had become the leading industrial power

in the world.  This immense technological boom, was due to three factors: a wealth

of natural resources, an explosion of inventions, and a growing urban population that

provided markets for new products.
