Though Eastern  Native American Tribes made fuel and medecine

from crude oil long before Europeans arrived on the continent,

early American settlers had little use for it.  In 1840, however,

Canadian geologist Abraham Gesner realized that kerosene could

be used to light lamps and discovered how to distill it from oil or

coal.  The Industrialization of America was under way.
